About Matthew Berthold
Matthew Berthold is a Los Angeles-based interior designer, stylist, visual merchandiser, and lover of all things decorative and beautiful.
Matthew appreciates all periods of design, and labels his eclectic style as "Hollywood Regency meets Tim Burton," while drawing from modern and contemporary designs. He's passionate about styling, event and home staging, and interior design, and hopes to eventually expand his firm into an all-encompassing design destination. As a child, he told his parents he "couldn't finish his homework without moving around the furniture," and after initial hesitation, they graciously let him rearrange the house at his discretion. This led to giving him full charge of a den makeover. His burgeoning passion and borderline obsession--he was known to swap furniture well into the night many Saturdays--was clear, and translated into a lifelong calling.
He began his design career as a visual merchandiser for J. Crew, combining his love of fashion with design and marketability. A stint at a Chicago-based party planning company helped Matthew realize his flair for event-planning and creating high-end environments for elegant, chic events. He then began working as a visual merchandiser and in-home stylist for the retailer West Elm in both Chicago and Los Angeles, where he cultivated his eye for interiors and kept his finger on the pulse of mainstream American design. After founding Matthew Berthold Design in 2013, Matthew strives to inspire clients by creating beautiful, livable, and fun spaces.
Matthew studied East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago and Art & Design at Columbia College Chicago. Artistic inspirations include Andy Warhol, Kelly Wearstler, Jonathan Adler, René Magritte, and Edward Gorey. Matthew currently resides in Los Angeles, California with his boyfriend Brian and their dog Barrett.
